Wellington airport gets a giant Gollum sculpture
New Zealand recently released Hobbit-themed legal tender in celebration of the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first of his Middle-earth trilogy. The Lord of the Rings was filmed on this southwestern Pacific island country and in anticipation for the release of the first Hobbit film, visitors will now have the pleasure of being welcomed into the country by a larger-than-life Gollum. Wellington International Airport recently revealed a 12-meter-long carved sculpture of Gollum: a twisted Hobbit who spends years living in a nearly pitch-dark cave eating fish. The creation was designed by Weta Workshop, a New Zealand-based company that handled the special effects and props for the upcoming film. The large model has Gollum grabbing at gigantic floating fish. When asked about the presentation piece, which was carved using chainsaws, Weta Workshop founder Richard Taylor told The Dominion Post of Wellington, “Wellington Airport feels like the home of Gollum after spending so many months here during the last three films.” The large sculpture weighs over 2,500 pounds, has a 42 meter outstretching arm and is the culmination of the efforts of 18 sculptors, model makers and painters. ~Brandon Bastaldo
