In order for Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch to become Smaug in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, he not only had to work on the voice, but also had to become reptilian, physically. Through motion-capture technology, Cumberbatch will actually become Smaug, his character that appears mainly in the second Hobbit installment, The Hobbit: There And Back Again, set to come out in December 2013. “I think my eye might open at the end of the first film,” he remarks, “and then you’ll get the rest of me in the second.” A filming experience Cumberbatch describes as “strangely liberating,” he assures people that preparing for his role involved more than just research, stating, “You can go to London Zoo and look at Komodo dragons and lizards but then you really just have to lose your inhibitions and just imagine yourself into it.” Although his Smaug character appears mostly in the second film, Cumberbatch also takes on the role of The Necromancer, also known as Sauron, in all three films of the Hobbit trilogy. It will certainly be interesting to see the different movements he decides to include for each character. ~Morgan Bates
