Air New Zealand unveils Hobbit plane
With the release of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey only a few weeks away, Air New Zealand has decided to take its appreciation for Middle-earth to new heights—literally. After unveiling a gigantic Gollum sculpture in Wellington airport in October and then premiering a Hobbit in-flight safety video, the airline has now revealed its biggest Hobbit-themed showpiece yet. This past weekend, Air New Zealand displayed a Boeing 777-300ER wrapped in a gigantic, Hobbit decal covering the length of the aircraft. The plane features iconic characters like Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves and head of Air New Zealand’s international marketing, Jodi Williams, says the flying advertisement is the largest graphic to ever cover an aircraft. The airline worked with Jackson’s Weta Workshop to craft the large banner and has kept the project strictly under wraps until now. Planned for usage on flights primarily between London and Los Angeles, Air New Zealand CEO Rob Fyfe says, “The aircraft is going to excite passengers and fans of Sir Peter Jackson’s award-winning fantasies alike when it begins regular Air New Zealand services.” Williams also says that this flying billboard will “give people more of a reason to actually select New Zealand to travel.”~Brandon Bastaldo
