We’ve already seen loads of production photos and videos released in anticipation of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. But earlier this week, Rolling Stone gave Tolkien fans the opportunity to hear the official sounds of The Hobbit too. Composed by the co-frontman of the New Zealand group Split Enz, Neil Finn, the “Song of the Lonely Mountain” track is a folk ballad that Finn explains “was developed from a dark and mysterious theme, which the dwarves sing early in the movie.” Speaking of reclaiming unforgotten gold and having mentions of the story’s infamous Arkenstone, it sounds as if Finn hit the gold-obsessed dwarves’ concerns on the head with this appropriately titled song, which will play over the end credits. When speaking about the recording process, Finn explains, “After some days of mining underground (actually, in Peter’s office) I emerged with the song,” which the musician describes as “a bold mix.” The movie won’t be released for another month but you can now hear the full soundtrack thanks to Empire Online, who posted it on their website yesterday. Because of copyright issues, listeners are only able to stream the soundtrack in full and cannot skip between tracks. ~Brandon Bastaldo
