More than 50 years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien started a dazzling story about dragons, wizards and hidden treasures in his classic fantasy novel The Hobbit. In 2001, director Peter Jackson took Tolkien‘s successful series to the next level with The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. In honor of the upcoming release on December 14 of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey — the first film of Jackson’s prequel trilogy filmed in New Zealand — the country has announced it will be releasing celebratory Hobbit-themed coins that aren’t just for show. Available to the public November 1, the new currency will feature iconic Tolkien characters like Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the White Wizard. Although initial collectors will have to pay a hefty price (the most expensive coins are made from an ounce of pure gold and retail for $3,020 USD) they can be used for their face value as acceptable legal tender all over New Zealand. ~Brandon Bastaldo
