Peter Jackson says Gandalf the White was “boring”
Towards the beginning of the second installment of The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, Gandalf the Grey returns to the series after seemingly being killed – this time, as Gandalf the White. It turns out that the filmmakers weren’t particularly fond of that version of the character. “Peter and I were just so thrilled that Gandalf the White wasn’t in The Hobbit,” says Ian McKellen – the actor who plays the character – in a conversation with Collider. “We prefer Gandalf the Grey.” Peter Jackson is quick to agree. “Gandalf the White was a bit boring,” he says, pledging his preference for the Grey Pilgrim over the White. And though McKellen acknowledges the necessity for his character to have that transformation back in Rings, he can’t help but feel excitement about returning to the roots of the character for this two-part installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again. “He was a man on a mission, so he had to get on with it. But, Gandalf the Grey has time to enjoy himself. He can have a smoke and a drink and a chat, and do a few little tricks. It was a great relief!” The first installment of Peter Jackson’s latest foray into Middle-Earth drops on December 14th of this year, with the concluding chapter arriving the following December 13th. ~Devin Garabedian
