Hobbit sequels get official titles and release dates
It’s official: Peter Jackson‘s adaptation of The Hobbit – formerly being split into two parts (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again) – will be a trilogy, and after much speculation, Warner Bros. and MGM have announced what the final titles and release dates will be for the films. The first installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, remains unchanged, retaining its subtitle and release date of December 14 this year. The second film – titled The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (as previously speculated) – will now fill the release slot of The Hobbit: There and Back Again (December 13th, 2013), and the final installment (which maintains the There and Back Again subtitle) will see release a mere eight months later, on July 18, 2014. Previous registered titles by the studio included Riddles in the Dark (the fifth chapter of the novel, and one of the most celebrated in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s catalog) and The Battle of Five Armies, a reference to the war that occurs at the climax of the story.
The final film’s release date is notable, as it will be the only entry in Jackson’s now-six-film, Middle-Earth franchise to not see an opening in the holiday window. “Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures to IGN. ~Devin Garabedian
