With the Hobbit films now officially up to three, fans have an understandable number of questions about what the film is going to contain – and how it might affect the previous two. A few important questions include: what’s it going to be called and, more importantly, when do we get to see it? Luckily, it hasn’t taken long for the unofficially official fan site TheOneRing.Net (TORn) to make a little headway in just that direction. The site is reporting that they have confirmed from several independent sources that the release date for The Hobbit 3 will actually be the summer of 2014. This is notable because it is the first time that any of Peter Jackson‘s Middle-Earth outings have broken from their December release tradition – prime placement for the awards season. More interestingly, however, is that TORn has uncovered a variety of potential titles for the film(s), as studio New Line Cinema has recently registered a whole pile of new domain names. This is common practice in Hollywood, where a studio will register many potential names in order to safeguard themselves against rights disputes. These titles include: The Hobbit: Riddles in the Dark, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies. Speculation has begun to rise that, with the addition of a third film, the second film’s title (The Hobbit: There and Back Again) is no longer applicable, and will have to be changed. This makes it likely that The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of Five Armies could become the names of the second and third titles, respectively, but nothing is set in stone at this point. The addition of the third film is not expected to interfere with or affect the first film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, in any way – it will still release under that title on December 14th. ~Devin Garabedian
