Earlier this week, fan-favorite, music-centric author Doug Adams confirmed to the world that Howard Shore has officially commenced the recording sessions for Peter Jackson‘s Hobbit trilogy. Shore, whose three-time, Oscar-winning work on the original Lord of the Rings trilogy fundamentally changed the way that the Academy restricts film scores (the rule stipulating that sequels that reused themes were ineligible for an Oscar was changed following the outcry over the shunning of The Two Towers – just so that they could nominate and give the award to The Return of the King) is back in his London studio with his full orchestra, recording music for all three parts of Jackson’s return to Middle-Earth.

Alongside him is Doug Adams, who rocketed to fame after his decade-spanning work chronicling Shore’s unprecedented, 10-hour score for the monumental original trilogy was released as The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films: A Comprehensive Account of Howard Shore’s Scores in October 2011. Adams will once again be there for every step of the process, fully documenting what will almost certainly be another historic session of music. “Today the musical world of Middle-earth begins expanding once again,” reports Adams from his personal blog. “Today, you can no longer say that you know every note of Shore’s music for Tolkien’s world. In fact, you only know about half of it. (This is a ballpark figure; I have no idea how long the three Hobbit films will be!) Today the subject of The Music of the Hobbit Films exists not just in concept, but in reality. Today a new journey begins…” We’ll get our first taste of the new work when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters on December 14.~Devin Garabedian
