While the stars of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey celebrate in New Zealand after the film’s world premiere last week, Stephen Colbert is doing his best to bring the Middle-earth party up north. The comedian and host of the series The Colbert Report has announced that for the week leading up to the film’s North American debut on December 14, The Colbert Report will host four nights of Hobbit-themed programming. Last month, rumors about Colbert making a cameo appearance in one of Jackson’s Hobbit films were rampant after it was reported that Jackson invited Colbert to New Zealand to visit the set of The Hobbit. While the rumors have proven to be false, at least for this first installment, Colbert is not afraid to flaunt his obsession for everything Hobbit and even Jackson says, “I’ve never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life.” After arriving on set, Jackson says that “we put [Colbert] head to head [with The Hobbit screenplay writer] Philippa Boyens on a Tolkien quiz,” and apparently, “Stephen triumphed.” ~Brandon Bastaldo
