When he’s not making deep sea dives, filmmaker/innovator James Cameron is busy changing the face of cinema. When news broke about the then-unheard-of filming practices Cameron experimented with for his 3D odyssey Avatar, fans and critics were skeptical about how the final product would look. Not only did Avatar gross over $2 billion worldwide, but Cameron’s use of cutting-edge stereoscopic procedures and 3D filming techniques are being hailed as a quantum leap for cinematic technology. So when Cameron made an appearance at the New Zealand premiere of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the press were anxious to hear Cameron’s thoughts about the controversial, 48 frames-per-second technology that Jackson used. On the red carpet, Cameron said, “If there is acceptance of 48, then that will pave the way for Avatar to take advantage of it.” Warner Bros. announced earlier this year that this first Hobbit film will only be seeing a limited release at the higher frame rate.
