When Peter Jackson announced he would be returning to helm the three-part adaptation of The Hobbit, many wondered how he would handle the extreme tonal difference between the book and its successor, The Lord of the Rings. Though he has recently discussed expanding The Hobbit‘s content in order to maintain consistency with the original trilogy, there was still a simple matter to contend with: Tolkien’s works were always highly musical in nature, and Jackson’s adaptation of the original trilogy largely (but far from completely) shied away from that fact. The Hobbit, being a children’s book, is even more musically inclined, and fans were worried that Jackson would not honor that element of the story. Fears were waylaid early, however, when the first teaser trailer featured a dark, brooding rendition of one of the book’s most pivotal music numbers. Now, Richard Armitage – who plays Thorin Oakenshield in the film, the descendent of a Dwarven king – has spoken to io9 about just this fact, putting fans’ fears to rest. When asked about the number featured in the trailer, Armitage was very firm. “Yeah, yeah, and there are other songs in it,” he explains. “Which I was kind of hoping for. But I thought, ‘Are they gonna shy away from that?’ But I think the culture of the dwarves, the dwarves are kind of raucous, dirty, filthy beasts. And when they party, they party hard. So there are a few drinking songs in there.” As anybody who has seen his trilogy can attest to, Jackson seems unable to resist a good drinking song.
