In addition to receiving three Oscar nominations for Best Achievement in Sound Mixing, Best Achievement in Visual Effects and Best Achievement in Sound Editing, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has won an award from the Visual Effects Society Awards for Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Feature Motion Picture for the character Smaug, voiced by 2013 British Artist of the Year, Benedict Cumberbatch. The third movie in the trilogy, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, hits theatres December 17, 2014.
