There are few filmmakers working today that approve of the level of insight that  Peter Jackson awards his fans. From ridiculously long special features on his home video releases to extensive, official replicas of nearly every design that makes it into the films (and some that don’t), Jackson knows his audience and is happy to appease them at every turn. Case-in-point: the latest addition to the massive, creative marketing push coming out of his Hobbit trilogy, a series of books known collectively as The Hobbit Chronicles. These books delve extensively into various aspects of the production in unprecedented detail, similar to what Doug Adams did for the music of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and will also be doing for Jackson’s latest additions to the franchise. The first announced book, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Chronicles: Art and Design, will work in conjunction with the artists at Jackson’s production house, WETA Workshop (who provide all of the special effects, both practical and digital, for the Middle-Earth films, not to mention such other favorites as Avatar and District 9) to explore the design process behind the making of the film. It will feature hundreds of full-color conceptual drawings and paintings, along with set designs, sculpture and glorious photography across more than 200 pages.

“We are very excited to be creating a series of books that celebrate the amazing work that is being done on The Hobbit movies,” says Richard Taylor, the co-founder and co-director of WETA Workshop, in a press release. “They will show the incredible attention to detail that goes into everything that is being produced for these films and are a wonderful opportunity to showcase the designs and artistry of so many people within their respective departments.”

Dan Hennah of the art department known as 3 foot 7, is similarly excited.”We are thrilled to be involved with the WETA Publishing team in the creation of the Hobbit (Specialist) Books,” adds Hennah in the same press release. “It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work produced by our amazingly talented artists & craftspeople who are responsible for conceptualizing, designing & building the sets, props and dressings for The Hobbit.”

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Chronicles: Art and Design will be timed to release day-and-date with the first entry in the new trilogy: December 14th, 2012. ~Devin Garabedian
